How Is HHC Flower Created? What You Need To Know

Hexahydrocannabinol (HHC) has really taken off since it first hit the scene a little over a year ago.  Known for being THC’s hydrogenated “twin”, this compound feels so similar to delta 9 THC, it is easy to understand why then, it has become enormously popular.  While HHC is available in all kinds of tantalizing product forms, including gummies, vapes, tinctures, and even capsules, one product type that we consider a serious must-try is HHC flower.

HHC flower is raw hemp flower that’s been infused with hexahydrocannabinol distillate.  It sounds simple enough, but the process of creating absolutely high-quality, effective, and of course, deeply satisfying HHC flower requires more effort than you may think.

Is HHC Natural or Synthetic?

Most hexahydrocannabinol found on the market is semi-synthetic, again, isolated from delta 9 THC to form what’s naturally found in the cannabis plant.  HHC is closely identical to THC but has two additional hydrogen atoms, and also achieves maximum productivity with minimum wasted effort when absorbed into the body.  All this really makes HHC one of the more intriguing cannabinoids out there.

The Process

Now, allow us to walk you through the entire process of producing HHC flower, so that you know exactly what you’re getting.

Step #1: It All Begins with Finding the Right Farm

When making any hemp-based HHC product, the first step is always settling on the perfect farm, which takes a lot of time as well as knowledge of what makes one farm’s hemp harvest better than the others.  Ideally, a company should find a farm that’s as local as possible, which plays a big role in the freshness and effectiveness of the product, and they should also be sure that the farm is certified as an organic one, since organically grown hemp is free of environmental toxins like pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other unwanted growing agents that’re chemical-based.

Step #2: Preparing the Flower Buds

The right farmers know exactly when to pick the flowering buds off of the hemp plant to harvest them.  There’s a sweet spot in terms of the maturity stages of the plant, when the HHC buds happen to have the absolute ideal composition of chemical compounds like cannabinoids and terpenes.

Once the HHC flower buds are picked, time to preserve them using a method known as “dry-curing”.  This is where the buds are stored in a dark, cool, and dry place for a specific period of time, until they’re cured, thus preventing the growth of mold from destroying them prematurely.

Step #3:Time to Make Some HHC Distillate

Now that we have the flower component ready to go, moving onto the HHC that gets infused into the flower.  It begins with making an hexahydrocannabinol distillate, which’s an isolated extract of pure hexahydrocannabinol, derived from hemp, which usually starts with a process called isomerization.  Hemp’s dominant chemical compound is CBD, which makes up around 15-20% of the plant.  By comparison, HHC is a very trace compound, making the process of extracting a meaningful amount hard, not to mention costly.

Isomerization is done by rearranging the molecular structure of CBD to convert it into HHC.  This can be done with all cannabinoids, since all cannabinoids in hemp are derived from CBG, the “mother cannabinoid” that precedes all others that we know.  Because all cannabinoids come from CBG, they all share the same molecular content, but in different configurations.

Then, a distillation method is applied, exposing the extract to steam in various pressures and temperatures to “evaporate away” the unwanted compounds, until what remains is an ultra-pure extract of just HHC.

Step #4: Infusing the Flower Buds

Next comes the infusion process, which makes raw hemp flower become HHC flower.  Some companies do this by dipping each flower bud into HHC distillate.  Others spray the flower buds with the distillate.  Then, a rarer method is crystallizing the distillate and sprinkling it onto the flower, which is known as “dusting”.  Each company uses their own technique, but the end result is the same: hemp flower that contains the right amount of HHC distillate to deliver that magnificent high that hexahydrocannabinol fans are looking for.

Step #5: Sending It Off for Third-Party Testing

Now, we have HHC flower that’s ready to be enjoyed – but before it can be packaged and sold, there’s one critical step that all companies must comply with, which is third-party testing.  This is when a company sends a sample of their HHC flower to a state-licensed third-party testing facility, where it’s analyzed for qualities that are extremely important, such as federal compliance, purity, possibility of contamination and presence of microbes.

The resulting lab report is sent back to the manufacturer, and the manufacturer has a responsibility to publish the lab report on their website, which gives customers the assurance that the product is legal, safe and high in quality.

Step #6: Packaging it Up

Yes, packaging matters more than you may realize.  Flower in general has a shelf life of around 6 months, which is far shorter than, say, a tincture or a vape, because the flower is raw.  This means that it’s all the more critical that a company makes sure that the flower is packaged in a way that prevents the product from breaking down.  In other words, the HHC flower must be kept in an airtight container.  That way, it’s not exposed to oxygen during storage and transit, which would make the product expire even sooner.  Obviously, the package should also tell you crucial bits of information like the brand, the name of the strain(s), and anything else that’s relevant to your experience as a user of the product.
