How To Spot Fake Delta 8 THC Products & Brands

The delta 8 THC market is thriving without any sign of slowing down in the near future, as demand continues to grow.  Delta-8 offers a totally unique way to experience hemp, providing a mild high as the cannabinoid is a derivative of delta 9 THC, while also being a federally legal compound, unlike its predecessor.

With a booming market comes a higher possibility of encountering fakes from time to time.  Needless to say, absolutely no one wants to find out that the delta 8 THC product they have just purchased is, in fact, illegitimate.  So, how can you tell then what’s a fake, and what’s the real deal?

How Common are Fake Delta 8 THC Products?

Truthfully, it is hard to know how much fake delta 8 THC is out there, because fake delta 8 is often sold through the black market, or possibly sold by unknowledgeable business owners who themselves do not know how to verify the authenticity of a delta-8 product

While our industry waits for some form of federal regulation, rules regarding how it is produced are lax, and this introduces an environment in which companies can have an easier time passing off fakes as the real deal.  Because there has been no major crackdown on fake hemp products, we cannot give a percentage of the number of fake delta 8 THC products in circulation, such as relatively unknown brands such as Cake and Bake.

We do know, however, they exist as there will always be shady companies preying on naïve customers who have no clue how to tell the difference between authentic and inauthentic delta 8.  Fake delta-8 can come in the form of vapes, tinctures, edibles, and so on, meaning that basically any type of d8 product out there has the potential to be fake.

Delta-8 vapes are the highest counterfeit products out there. We will identify how to know if a Delta 8 product such as a delta 8 vape cartridge is fake or counterfeit, as well as the top delta 8 THC stores to buy trusted products and brands.

What Can Make a Delta 8 Product Counterfeit?

Well, it can be fake in a few different ways.  Essentially, for delta 8 THC to be authentic, it must check certain boxes:

  • Must come from the hemp plant, not the marijuana plant.
  • Must contain a concentrated extract of the delta 8 THC compound, which has been extracted using a distillation or isomer-based method.
  • Distillation method uses steam distillation to purify delta 8.
  • Isomer-based method involves rearranging the molecules of cannabidiol (CBD) to convert it into delta 8.

These are the only ways to truly end up with a pure delta 8 extract, so any other extraction method is questionable.

Here are the forms of fake delta-8 and delta-10 that may exist on the market.

#1: Sketchy or Fake Delta 8 Brand

The first major problem with identifying a fake Delta 8 THC brand is knowing if they are a trusted brand, and not sketchy or hidden from public view. There are a few pretty major brands in distribution to Delta 8 and CBD retail stores that have fake Delta 8 products, and use other scary compounds in them to make them cheaper or more powerful. We’ll go more into ingredients later, however you should always be cautious of brands that have very limited information or exposure online in terms of who they are and who owns them, but yet they are in every store corner.

There is very little trust in Delta 8 brands in general. And having a brand that is so popular, yet very sly with no lab reports available anywhere should provide a major red flag for consumers, and even Delta 8 stores alike. However, the demand and income makes the answer easy for unethical stores to turn away and keep selling.

We always strongly recommend looking up the company and brand online, and see reviews available. Larger trusted and legitimate companies like Binoid should be the model for authenticity. You should compare searches for them on google versus other obscure or suspicious companies only found in stores.

#2: Possible Marijuana-Derived Delta 8 or Delta 9

There may be marijuana-derived delta 8 on the market, as delta 8 can also naturally occur in the marijuana plant.  This may act as an easier source of delta 8 on the manufacturer’s part, as a higher prevalence of delta 9 in marijuana compared to hemp would imply a higher prevalence of delta 8 as well.

But, marijuana continues to be a federally illegal substance that’s banned in most states, so marijuana-derived delta 8 is not only technically fake delta 8, since consumers are being lied to about its source, but it’s also illegal. Additionally, many companies can just be using regular Delta 9 THC in their products instead of Delta-8. We’re not sure why they would do this, however it may be to give a bigger high instead of the minor mental Euphoria that Delta 8 gives.

In comparison, Binoid and their Delta 8 brand partners only use high quality 85-92% Delta 8 distillate in their vape cartridges.

#3: No Delta 8 THC Used

Believe it or not, some products being marketed as delta 8 THC products may not actually contain any delta 8 at all.  We know this may sound crazy, but because this market is not regulated by an authoritative body, it is hard to stop a company that is producing 100% counterfeit products marketed as delta 8 formulas.

So, what might be in a fake delta 8 product, if it does not actually contain any of the compound?  Well, anything that a shady company sees fit.  This could be CBD marketed as delta 8, an illegally synthetic form of THC that isn’t actually delta 8, or terpenes with no cannabinoids whatsoever.  Sadly, the possibilities seem limitless with no oversight or reputation damages as an “invisible” company. There are a few Delta 8 brands that fit this description unfortunately.

Many products such as vape cartridges will say 1000mg, however it will not say 1000mg of Delta 8. This means it can be 1000mg of anything. 990mg of CBD and 10mg of Delta 8 for example. In contrast, trustworthy Delta 8 brands such as Binoid use premium 92% Delta 8 distillate, with 4% terpene flavors and 4% plant lipids in their vapes. No extra fillers or cutting agents. This equals to 920mg of Delta 8 in each vape cartridge. Not many brands are this open about their ingredients. You should only buy from companies who are very open and honest.

#4: Dangerous Additional Ingredients

Some products may contain delta 8 THC but have been formulated with harmful ingredients.  While this does not necessarily make the delta 8 itself fake, it falls into the same category because it’s a product made by a dishonest company.  We all remember the cases of pneumonia caused by enthusiasts unknowingly purchasing delta 9 THC vape carts containing Vitamin E, a harmful ingredient to inhale.

Sketchy brands out there may be putting similarly harmful additives in their delta 8 products without actually being transparent about the ingredients that they use. They would use these ingredients to make the products cheaper to make, and therefore more profits. Especially on the black market or retail store locations. This is why we always suggest getting Delta 8 THC products online at trustworthy stores such as Binoid.

#5: Counterfeit Designed Products

Similar to Cannabis Delta 9 THC brands, Delta 8 brands are starting to see counterfeit products with the designs. Shady practices from people could be to make fake counterfeit products for a cheap price with fake vape cartridges to sell in stores. This has not been much of a problem for Delta 8 products to this point. However, we are starting to see it happen more and more daily.

In contrast, online stores such as Binoid only sell verified companies and products on their website. This means purchasing from the brands individually, and creating long lasting partnership to get high quality Delta-8 products for an amazing price

How Do You Know Whether or Not a Delta 8 Product Might be Fake?

You may be alarmed at the thought of coming across fake delta 8 THC products that look just like genuine ones you’ve purchased in the past.  Good news is that there are some easy signs that what you are about to purchase is not, in fact, authentic.

Look for Lab-Testing from a Certified Laboratory

The easiest way to verify the legitimacy of a delta 8 product is to simply look for lab reports.  These lab reports are standard practice among reputable Delta-8 brands and imply that they’ve had their delta 8 THC sent off to a laboratory to be analyzed for purity, quality and legitimacy.  When looking at the lab reports on a company’s website, cross-reference the laboratory name at the top corner of the report to make sure that they are a legitimate lab that is certified with their state’s department of agriculture.

Choose a Licensed Delta 8 Brand

Only buy delta 8 THC and delta 10 THC from a licensed business, like a local store that’s authorized to sell delta 8 products, or an online company that makes their certifications available.  DO NOT buy delta 8 from some random guy in your neighborhood via craigslist or social media, or through some other kind of shady online source. Extracting Delta-8 requires specific processes that takes some to perfect. Therefore, buying from obscure locations, versus reputable online companies is probably not a wise choice or idea.

Brands such as Binoid with over 1000 reviews on their website is a good start for finding a trusted Delta 8 company to buy from online, and in store.

Look for Transparency In The Delta 8 Company

The more thorough a company is on their website about how their delta 8 THC is made, the better.  They should clearly state the extraction method they use, how they source their hemp and the ingredients they put into each formula.  Now sure, a shady company could copy and paste this info from a legit brand.  But, generally speaking, a company that goes out of their way to share their various manufacturing methods and practices is less likely to be trying to deceive you.

Again, Delta 8 THC brands such as Binoid focus on product transparency and be very front-facing about their quality and manufacturing process. That should be the gold standard for any Delta 8 product you buy.

Avoid Businesses that Do Not Specialize in Hemp Products

These are places like gas stations and convenience stores.  The fact of the matter is that these retailers are less likely to have the knowledge to discern fake from authentic delta 8, and may even unknowingly be selling counterfeit products.  Buy from reputable businesses with positive reviews and generally good reputations for the delta-8 that they offer.

Binoid CBD launched in 2018 selling high quality CBD products, and within the last few years have grown to sell everything from the best CBD available, to Delta 8 THC and Delta 10 THC. Plus more Hemp-derived cannabinoids in the future such as THC-V, THC-P, CBN, CBC and more. They have over 1000 product reviews and growing fast. They are the perfect example of a company specialized in Hemp-derived products.
