What To Look Out For With Amanita Tinctures Safety

Amanita Muscaria isn’t exactly a new discovery.  The famous red-capped, white polka-dotted mushroom can be spotted from a mile away, and it even has been a staple of cultural ceremonies around the world for at least the last several hundred years, at least.  Still, only now is it really making a mark on the U.S, market in various product forms, all while being federally legal despite its legendary psychedelic effects through its key compound, muscimol.

Now that we’re seeing more amanita mushroom products being manufactured, it’s time to talk about what to look for when shopping for the different product types you’ll be seeing more and more of.  And, with tinctures being the most in-demand amanita product out there, we need to talk a little bit about ingredients, so you know which ingredients you should avoid no matter what.

What are Amanita Mushroom Tinctures?

It’s simple: an amanita mushroom tincture is simply a tincture that contains amanita extract and a carrier oil, in various milligram strengths.  It’s really no different from cannabis tinctures, except instead of containing cannabis extracts, the active ingredient is an extract of amanita muscaria mushrooms.  Amanita mushrooms are psychedelic, and like we said, they get their properties from muscimol – a compound that you might consider as a cousin to psilocybin.

Muscimol is a bit more sedating than psilocybin, since it works on GABA receptors rather than serotonin receptors, with the former being more associated with the nervous system’s ability to handle stress, and even maintain a sense of inner calm.  Still, in high doses, muscimol, like psilocybin, can cause psychedelic effects, including visual hallucinations, changes in perception of time and space, and deep insights that can be quite spiritual.

The Basics on Ingredients You May Encounter in Amanita Mushroom Tinctures

Amanita mushroom tinctures usually contain just two ingredients: amanita extract and a carrier oil.  Still, not all companies aim to make the cleanest, healthiest tinctures out there, so let’s offer a general list of what you should and shouldn’t find in tinctures.

“Good” Ingredients:

  • Amanita Muscaria Extract: Again, there should be a high enough concentration of the key active ingredient in every amanita tincture.
  • Carrier Oil: Tinctures must contain some kind of carrier oil to dilute the extract, which should be plant-based (MCT oil, hempseed oil, grapeseed oil, etc.)
  • Flavoring: Sometimes, amanita tinctures contain flavoring ingredients, which again should be plant-based to keep the formulas as natural as possible.
  • Citric Acid (And Similar Natural Preservatives): Citric acid and similar natural acids may be used as preservatives, although this is rare.  Amanita Tinctures really don’t need preservatives, but if a natural preservative like citric acid is in the formula, it’s not going to cause harm or lower the value of the product.
  • Cannabinoids: Some companies may add cannabinoid extracts to their mushroom tinctures, and if they do, that should be clearly stated on the product label.
  • Other Mushrooms: Some tinctures contain “mushroom blends,” which combine amanita extract with the extracts of other, often nonintoxicating mushrooms.
  • Misc. Active Ingredients: You may encounter other active ingredients, like certain herbs or botanicals which enhance the effects of the amanita product, and again, this should be clearly indicated on the label to avoid being misleading.

“Bad” Ingredients:

  • Synthetic Preservatives: Many synthetic preservatives, like potassium sorbate, BHA, and BHT, have been linked to some concerning health problems, including potential carcinogenic effects.
  • Most Artificial Flavoring: There are thousands of artificial flavoring ingredients out there, many of which are not considered healthy for the body in large amounts.
  • Fillers/Additives: Again, avoid amanita tinctures that contain loads of synthetic ingredients that don’t actually contribute to the quality of the product itself.
  • Unnatural Active Ingredients: This is something that’s more common on the black market than in legit retailers, but you may come across products claiming to be amanita tinctures, which actually contain a low concentration of amanita extract, and a high concentration of an unnatural ingredient that mimics the effects of amanita – like a synthetic sedative that tricks people into thinking that it’s the amanita that’s making them feel calm.
  • General High Concentration of Fillers: “Fillers” refer to products that don’t serve any purpose other than “filling out” the formula – basically diluting the active, more expensive ingredients with something that’s really cheap and bulks up the product.  Look through the list of ingredients in amanita tinctures, and then see if there are lots of ingredients that don’t actually add value to the experience you’re going to have with them.  Again, tinctures don’t actually require more than 2 ingredients.
  • Allergens: If you do happen to be allergic to specific ingredients, you’ll want to take the extra time to look through what’s in a tincture formula, as while certain allergens aren’t necessarily “bad”, they can cause negative effects to your health.  This includes certain types of sweeteners, flavoring, or binders that help create the amanita tincture texture.

Overall, you should never buy amanita tinctures from a company that doesn’t disclose the ingredients that they use extensively.  Companies should make this information easy to find both on their website, and also on the label of the product.  Companies that hide this info from consumers might deliberately be trying to hide just how low-quality their tinctures are, and with so many premium amanita tinctures available today, there’s no reason to settle for a shady company.

Make Sure You Know What’s in that Amanita Tincture!

As amanita mushroom tinctures become easier to find on the market, you’ll notice more and more companies releasing their own unique version of tinctures infused with amanita extract.  But, never buy any amanita product before looking through the ingredients, to make sure that you’re not consuming something questionable, or even harmful.

Thankfully, the amanita mushroom vapes, tinctures, and other products at Binoid are all made with clean, safe ingredients, and are totally free of harmful additives and fillers.
