How Is Delta 8 Flower Made? What You Should Know

Is Delta 8 THC Natural or Synthetic?

Most people would consider delta 8 THC to be a natural cannabinoid, but the reality is, most delta 8 is synthesized from another hemp compound.  Technically, the label “synthetic” applies to any delta-8 cannabinoid that wasn’t naturally produced by hemp flower.  Still, a lot of people equate synthetic substances with chemicals that have man-made, toxic ingredients.

Remember, nothing is added to, or even taken away from delta 8 THC during the isomerization process.  All the substances at hand in isomerized delta 8 remain natural, they have just been moved around.  Man-made or toxic is never there during the conversion process, so all the terrible interconnections pertaining to the word “synthetic” are kept away.

Question, is Delta 8 THC Grown or Made?

Delta 8 THC is generally made by converting another cannabinoid, but it’s also possible to breed hemp to naturally produce delta 8.  Increase concentrations of any cannabinoid found in cannabis with selective breeding can be done, but this painstaking process takes a while to see reasonable results.

The Process

Now, allow us to walk you through the entire process of producing delta 8 flower, so that you know exactly what you’re getting.

Step #1: Sourcing the Hemp Material

The very first step when producing any hemp product is sourcing the raw hemp material, by finding a farm that grows top-shelf plant.  It’s important to pick a farm that’s as local as possible, because the less hemp has to travel, the fresher it is.  At the same time, the hemp should be grown organically, to ensure that the product contains no pesticides, herbicides or fungicides that can introduce toxins into the body while depleting the value of the plant’s chemical composition.  

Step #2: Cultivating and Dry-Curing the Flower Buds

Next is gathering the flower buds from the plant at the perfect level of maturity.  There’s a small window of time during which these buds have the ideal composition of chemical compounds like cannabinoids and terpenes.  An experienced farmer picks the buds just at the right moment, and then begins the dry-curing process.

Dry-curing is a method of preserving the flower buds to keep them nice and potent while preventing the growth of mold and other microorganisms.  The flower is kept in a cool, dark and dry place for a specific period of time to cure it, so that it can remain fresh for up to 6 months.

Step #3: Producing a Delta 8 Extract

Now, we have hemp flower that can be sold as is.  But, delta 8 flower takes things a step further by infusing each bud with delta 8 distillate.  To produce delta 8 distillate, companies use an isomerization process.  Each cannabinoid in the hemp plant can have its molecules rearranged to be converted into another naturally occurring hemp cannabinoid, because all cannabinoids are isomers of one another through their “mother cannabinoid”, cannabigerol (CBG), which’s the cannabinoid found in the early stages of the plant’s life cycle before splitting off into the 100 or so cannabinoids we derive from mature flower. 

Cannabidiol (CBD) and delta 8 THC are isomers of one another, and CBD is far more abundant in the plant, so this is the cannabinoid that is rearranged on a molecular scale to become delta 8 THC.  The CBD extract is exposed to varying levels of steam, heat, and pressure to discard each unwanted compound until all that remains is a pure concentrate of delta 8, which is odorless, flavorless, and colorless, and ready to be infused into the dry-cured hemp flower buds.  

Note: The isomerization process that creates delta 8 THC from another cannabinoid shouldn’t add any new variables into the mix, hence the safety of converted delta 8 should be close to identical as that of natural delta 9 THC. 

Step #4: Infusing the Flower with Delta 8 THC Distillate

Now, it’s time of the infusion process.  This way, each flower bud contains an active serving of pure delta 8 distillate so that consuming the flower produces a delta 8 high.  Companies can use a few different methods for this process.  One is spraying the flower buds with the distillate, and another is dipping.  The less common method is dusting, in which the distillate is converted into a solid and sprinkled onto the flower.  Some companies use a combination of methods for a more thorough infusion process.  

Also, the quality of the flower delta 8 that gets sprayed has a deeper impact.  Even though you decide to smoke delta 8 THC, you will also be inhaling the flower it’s sprayed on.  In fact, a good portion of hemp producers don’t take into account fully the importance of well-grown and organic flower to the overall smoking experience. 

Step #5: Proper Lab-Testing

Once the flower is produced, time to get sent off to a third-party laboratory for a rigorous testing process.  Here’s where an unbiased facility analyzes the delta 8 flower for its potency, purity, legal compliance, chemical breakdown and any contamination that could make it unsafe for consumption.  Companies must provide the resulting lab report on their website for transparency with their customers.

Step #6: Packaging is Critical

From there, it’s time to package the flower, and this step shouldn’t be overlooked in terms of importance.  How delta 8 flower is packaged and make or break the user’s experience with the product.  It should be labeled to tell customers the weight of the product as well as the strain.  After that, it has to get stored in a cool, dark, and dry place to maintain its freshness until it’s ready to be shipped out.
