Magic Mushrooms Drug Test: Why You Will Fail

Magic mushrooms are becoming increasingly accepted by society thanks to a host of new studies demonstrating their legitimate therapeutic benefits.  But, at the end of the day, they remain federally illegal, and while decriminalized in certain parts of the country, they’re still heavily restricted – unless you live in Oregon, where they’re now fully legalized.

How Long Do Magic Mushrooms Stay in the System?

Before we get into drug-testing, there is something that needs to be said about the length of time during which a person could, potentially, test positive for magic mushrooms – mainly, psilocybin, the psychedelic compound responsible for their effects.  It turns out that in most cases, traces of mushrooms will be totally cleared by the system within 24 hours of taking them – or, up to 3 days, if a person took a lot, or took them consistently.  

If you’ve ever studied drug-testing before, then you know that this is actually an incredibly short period of time compared to other substances.  For instance, a person can test positive for marijuana for up to a month after taking it, depending on how much was taken.  So, the body does, in fact, metabolize mushrooms very, very, quickly, regardless of how they were consumed (ingested, absorbed sublingually, etc.)

Testing for Magic Mushrooms

Before we actually talk about whether or not a drug test can pick up magic mushrooms, let’s go over the most commonly used types of drug tests in the United States.

• Urine Test: Urine tests are by far the most common type of drug test in the United States, and almost all employers use this type of test when testing employees for drugs.  Urine tests can show evidence of drug use roughly 2-60 days after the last dose, depending on the amount that’s in the body.  They’re dependable, inexpensive, and have a fast turnaround time, making them a highly efficient means for drug-testing.

• Saliva Test: A saliva test can determine whether or not certain drugs were taken within the last 10 hours.  And, they’re far more commonly used by law enforcement officers than anyone else, basically to inform them whether or not a person may be intoxicated at the time of the test.  

• Hair Test: Hair tests usually show evidence of drug use within the last 90 days.  They’re not a popular choice for employment, because they’re expensive and have a long turnaround time, not to mention somewhat unreliable, and negated if the person cuts or dyes their hair.  

• Blood Test: A blood test only shows if someone is currently high on a substance, as for a person to be intoxicated, they must have the substance in their bloodstream.

• Sweat Test: A sweat test is rarely used for drug-testing, and more associated with clinical trials.  That’s because it’s quite invasive, involving a person attaching an adhesive patch to their skin for 2 weeks, which collects a sample of their perspiration.

Does Psilocybin Get Picked Up on a Drug Test?

Interestingly, most common drug tests – urine tests, to be more specific – don’t look for psilocybin at all.  What they are looking for is:

• Cannabis
• Cocaine
• Opiates
• Amphetamines
• PCP

And, in some cases, more advanced tests, which are less common, also look for:

• Benzodiazepines
• MDMA
• Methadone
• Barbiturates
• Alcohol
• Propoxyphene
• Methaqualone

But, does that mean that there is no way to test for mushrooms?  No, in fact.  There are specialized tests that can pick up psilocybin in the urine, as it turns out.  But, these are rarely used.  For one thing, they’re an added expense to the already somewhat costly nature of drug-testing in settings like employment, probation, etc. 

Secondly, most environments simply won’t test for psilocybin because almost all individuals will completely clear detectable levels of it in their urine within 24 hours of consuming them.  So, there really is an extremely short window of time during which, say, an employer could “catch” an employee using them.  

What’s the Likelihood of Failing a Drug Test, if Mushrooms are Being Tested for?

Let’s now talk about the off chance that you are going to be tested for magic mushrooms, and you have consumed them in the last couple of days.  Are you guaranteed to fail?  No, as failing depends on certain variables. Which very much includes whether that product has Hemp-derived THC in it, which would fail a drug test. Any product claiming to be “magic mushrooms” on the open market likely means that it is mostly Hemp-derived Delta THC mixed with functional mushrooms. In that case, it will fail a drug test. Otherwise, see below.

#1: How Much You Consumed

The dosage you took is going to play a role in how likely you are to fail.  If you took a micro-dose of magic mushroom within the last 24 hours, you’re almost definitely in the clear by the time 24 hours have passed since your last dosage.  If you took, say, 3 grams of mushrooms, you may have a tiny bit of psilocybin in the system that can still be detected for another day or so.

#2: How Frequently You Consumed It

Another factor is how much you were taking consistently.  If you took a large dose of magic mushrooms, say, 3 days in a row, then it’s possible to test positive for up to 3 or so days, as there’s something of a backup effect happening while the body metabolizes the active compounds.  But, taking large doses of mushrooms several days in a row is something that most people simply don’t do.

#3: Your Metabolism and Hydration Levels 

Of course, if you happen to have a slow metabolism, it can take a little longer than 24 hours to totally clear psilocybin from the system.  But still, testing positive for more than 3 days is unlikely – extremely unlikely, in fact.  And, drinking more water than usual can flush it out of your system faster, so hydration levels do play a role as well.

Magic Mushrooms are Less Likely to Show Up on a Drug Test Than You May Have Thought 

Surprisingly, magic mushrooms, despite being an illegal drug, are unlikely to cause a failed drug test result, because actually being tested for them is extremely rare.  And, even if you were to be tested for them, the good news is that the chance of failing is highly unlikely if it’s been over a day or 2 since you last consumed them. 

What this means is that if you’re being tested using a standard urine test, you probably don’t have anything to worry about.
