How To Easily Read A Cannabinoid Lab Report: Updated Guide

When it comes to buying any hemp-based product, the one absolutely essential thing to look for is a lab report.  The lab report is usually found somewhere on the manufacturer’s website, and it’s so crucial that should the company not provide it to customers, you should avoid buying the product altogether.

Third-party lab-testing is a critical part of producing cannabinoid products, and they tell the customer whether or not the product they’re about to buy is genuine, potent, safe and generally high in quality.  But, if you’re something of a cannabinoid newbie, you may not know what information you should be looking for once you do come across one.

Why Third-Party Lab Reports are So Important

All hemp products should be third-party lab-tested, period.  This is required by law and ensures that customers have a way to obtain objective, unbiased information about the nature and safety of a particular cannabinoid product.  It means that each batch of hemp extract produced by a company must be sent to a third-party laboratory that is licensed by the state to analyze samples of cannabis.  There, the sample is carefully analyzed according to specific criteria and standards.

As lab-testing is standard, companies should make it as easy as possible for customers to access these lab reports.  Usually, you can find these lab reports in one of two places.  One is on each product page, and the other is a separate page on the website that lists all of the lab reports in one location.

Are All Lab Reports Authentic?

Most companies out there that produce hemp products are honest, and their lab reports are authentic.  But, hemp is such a profitable industry that it’s not out of the question that some companies are faking their lab reports, to get away with selling cheaply made or even fake hemp formulas.  Lab reports are required to state the name of the laboratory, as well as a reference number for each test.  This means that if you want to be completely sure you’re looking at an authentic report, you can trace the report back to the lab if you so choose.

What You’ll Find on a Lab Report

Once you do come across a lab report, there are certain things that you’ll want to look for as indicators of the overall quality of the product you wish to buy.  So, let us break down the key sections that are worth paying attention to.  Just be aware that most lab reports come with two separate parts.

  • Part 1: Usually a single page gives you the breakdown of what’s in the hemp extract in terms of its individual compounds, and a general indication of the purity level.
  • Part 2: Multi-page analysis of other factors more related to safety, which gives you an idea of any potential contaminants, toxins, etc.

Cannabinoid Profile

First, always look at the cannabinoid profile.  Let’s say you’re purchasing a delta 8 gummy which should contain pure delta 8.  The cannabinoid profile should contain almost all delta 8 THC, with only trace amounts of other cannabinoids, if any.  Or, if you’re buying a full spectrum CBD product, the cannabinoid profile should show a wide variety of cannabinoids in the hemp extract.  The cannabinoid profile gives you not only the ratio of cannabinoids, but the potency of them as well.

Terpene Profile

If the product contains terpenes, then you should also see a breakdown of each terpene that’s in the product.  There are over 100 terpenes in hemp, but most likely, the terpene profile will only show the most prominent ones.  This is a great way to verify the strain that’s being sold, if you know what it’s terpene profile is supposed to look like.

Federal Compliance

The cannabinoid profile also indicates whether or not the product is compliant with federal law.  The law states that a hemp product must contain no more than 0.3% delta 9 THC in order to be sold legally.  The cannabinoid profile will clearly show whether or not the product contains the legal limit of delta 9.

Pesticides

Basically, there is no place for pesticides in a hemp product.  Besides the fact that purification techniques are supposed to remove these types of impurities, the best hemp products come from organically grown plant material, and organic hemp is pesticide-free.

Heavy Metals

Most lab reports also show you whether or not heavy metals were found in the sample.  Usually, these heavy metals come from poor-quality soil in which the industrial hemp is grown.  Heavy metals are impurities that should be avoided.

Solvents

Lab reports have a section that indicates whether or not the sample contains residual solvents.  Certain extraction methods rely on solvents, which effectively convert the raw plant material into an oil-soluble extract.  Full spectrum hemp products are usually produced using a CO2-based extraction method, and so no solvents should be present.  But, distillate-based products are usually made using solvent-based extraction processes.  Still, there should be pretty much zero residual solvents remaining in the product, since there are methods to remove these solvents.

Microbes

Microbes are microorganisms that include fungus and bacteria.  The most common example would be mold, which indicates contamination of the product.  Look carefully through this section to know that your THC product will be completely free of potentially harmful contaminants.

Know You’re Getting Top-Shelf Hemp by Reading the Lab Report

Without looking at a third-party lab report, you have no way of truly knowing that the hemp product you’re about to buy is high in quality, or even legitimate.  The good news is that the large majority of brands out there make it very easy to access these lab reports, since they have nothing to hide from consumers.

Binoid has a separate page on the website that lists lab reports for every available product, so customers can easily reference them before making a purchase.  We invite you to take a look, that way, you can see that our company carries only legal, pure, clean, and potent products.
