What Happens If You Take Too Much THC-X

THC-X is a relatively new cannabinoid, and a semi-synthesized one, being an acetated form of delta 9 THC to offer an even more powerful high than what we’re used to with “regular” THC.  THC-X is somewhat misunderstood still because it’s so new, but one thing that we know is that like with any cannabinoid, you can get too high off of it.  So, what does that mean, and is there anything that you can do about it?

THC-X: The Basics

THC-X is an acetated version of delta 9 THC that’s based off of THC-O, a cannabinoid developed in the 1960s by the US military.  It’s estimated to be about 3 times as intoxicating as delta 9 THC, and the effects are said to be euphoric and sedating to the body, while potentially trippy in high doses.

Is it Dangerous to Take Too Much THC-X?

Rest easy that with THC-X, as well as every other cannabinoid, no one has ever died from an overdose, or experienced real danger to the body.  Cannabinoids are known to be nontoxic to the human body, and do not show any evidence of causing life-threatening symptoms.  And, no one has ever experienced permanent damage to their health because they took too much of a cannabinoid.

Luckily, all of this means that you don’t have to worry about much should you take more than intended.  But still, there’s a risk of side effects if you take too much THC-X, or any cannabinoid, which are known for being mild and short-lived.

Common Ways to Take Too Much THC-X

With THC-X, we want to mention that there are multiple ways in which you might end up more high than you were planning for.  Let’s take a closer look.

Not Knowing Your THC-X Tolerance

If you just have a generally low tolerance to THC, because of inexperience or naturally tolerating lower amounts than the average person, then even a standard dose may be too high for you.  If you know that your tolerance is low, maybe try just half the recommended amount of THC-X instead of a complete dose.

Too High of a THC-X Dose

A lot of people mistakenly take a bigger dose than what’s on the product label.  This is why we always say that it’s important to read the label of the THC-X product, as that’s where dosing directions will be.

Dabbing THCX

Dabbing is the act of vaping concentrates, and concentrates are incredibly potent – after all, it’s in the name.  Unless you have a very high THC tolerance to begin with, avoid dabbing, since the high can be way too overwhelming for newbies.

Taking THC-X Edibles

Some people are just sensitive to the side effects of edibles, and get way too high from them.  Edibles also create the longest-lasting effects, so any possible side effects that come from taking too much could last longer than what you were prepared for.

THC-X Edibles behave differently in terms of effects from other product types, because ingesting these compounds allow the liver to release metabolites that enter the bloodstream and behave differently from the cannabinoid itself.  This can cause people to feel more anxiety and paranoia than what they’d get from other delivery methods.

What Happens if You Take Too Much THC-X?

Now that we know that taking too much THC-X isn’t actually life-threatening, let’s go over the side effects that can occur, so you can know what side effects you may encounter.

You Might Feel Anxious and/or Paranoid

When we’re too high with THC-X, it’s easy to develop anxiety and paranoia while the high lasts, and this is true of any intoxicating cannabinoid.  Scientists still don’t have a solid understanding as to why this side effect occurs in some people more than others, but it is because of THC’s influence on our mood through its influence over neurotransmitters in the brain.

You Might Feel Lightheaded and Get “Green Out”

Some people talk about “green out” when they get too high with THC-X, and that’s caused by a drop in blood sugar that results from taking too much of any form of THC.  This can make you feel lightheaded, weak, dizzy, and a somewhat faster heartrate.  Keep in mind that a green out isn’t a real medical concern, so sit back, relax, and let it pass.

You Might Get Cottonmouth and Bloodshot Eyes

Two of the most well-known side effects of most cannabinoids are cottonmouth (excessively dry mouth) and bloodshot eyes, and neither of these side effects last beyond a few hours.

You Might Feel Sleepy/Sluggish

A lot of people describe feeling drowsy or sleepy when they’re high, and of course, that can actually be helpful, if they’re using THC-X cannabinoids for sleep.  Just know that you might be sort of lethargic or groggy until the high begins to taper off.

You May Get the Shakes

It’s quite rare, but you might get the shakes from taking too much THC-X.  This is not actually a reason to seek medical attention, since it’s just the nervous system responding to the effects of cannabinoids.

You Might Become Forgetful

Being too high with THC-X can affect cognitive functions like concentration and alertness, and so you may find that you’re forgetting thoughts as fast as they appear, struggling to retain your thoughts and focus on things in front of you.

Is There Anything You Can Do if You’re Too High?

Believe it or not, there are some methods that people swear by to reduce the intensity of the high you get from these types of cannabinoids.

  • Wait it Out: The best solution is to just wait, and allow a few hours until the high is past its peak, at which point it naturally starts to dissipate.  Just remind yourself that you’re not in any real danger, and allow yourself to rest.
  • Drink Some Coffee: There’s a distinctive synergistic relationship between caffeine and THC, which means that some simple coffee could help you feel more like yourself when you’re overly high.
  • Consume Some Citrus: Some people turn to fresh citrus, saying that it helps when they’re too high, thanks to the limonene in citrus fruit.  Limonene is a terpene that can subdue the heavier effects of THC.
  • Take Some CBD: CBD is known to balance out the stronger effects of THC, as CBD and THC share a unique synergistic relationship with one another.

Getting Too High Off of THC-X is Possible, But You Don’t Have to Worry About Real Harm

Ultimately, you can take as much THC-X as you want and not worry about any life-threatening effects.  But, most people want to avoid getting too high, because even the mild side effects can be unpleasant.

The best thing you can do is stick to the recommended THC-X dosage on the label of the product, take your tolerance into account, and know that if side effects do come up, you’re going to be just fine in a few hours at most.
