THCA Flower Shelf Life: Expiration Date

THCA flower has got the whole hemp community buzzing, because of its striking similarities to weed, all while being totally legal.  This relatively new product promises the high of delta 9 THC, along with all of the known potential benefits of cannabis that have been studied intensely for decades.  But, your THCA flower experience is only going to be rewarding if you’re using product that’s fresh – and in some cases, that’s easier said than done.

If you’ve ever wondered how long THCA flower is good for, allow us to answer that question as thoroughly as possible.  The answer isn’t simple, because it depends on a surprising number of factors.

Does THCA Flower Have an Actual Shelf Life?

First things first: THCA does have a shelf-life.  In general, flower is good for up to 6 months, which is the length of time it takes for the compounds in the plant to naturally degrade.  The cannabinoids and terpenes in flower are organic compounds which naturally break down with age, and by the end of this process, they lose all effectiveness, making flower pretty much useless – not to mention lacking in flavor and aroma, which are appealing as well.

THCA flower has a shorter shelf life than other product types because those products are made with an extract of hemp, which has a shelf life of about 2 years.  What this means is that flower is only really worth using from the time the flower is harvested to 6 months later.

What Will Happen if I Use Expired THCA Flower?

So, does that mean that expired THCA flower is unsafe?  No, thankfully.  Flower doesn’t become rotten if it’s left to expire, so you don’t have to worry about that.  The only exception is flower that’s gotten moldy, which you should be able to tell just by appearance or smell.  That could be harmful to consume.

Overall, the only thing that will happen when you consume old flower is that you won’t get high off of it.  That alone is enough of a reason to simply get rid of it, and purchase more.  Naturally, it also means that you should make a point to only buy as much flower as you’ll realistically use within 6 months or so.

How Do I Know I’m Buying Fresh THCA Flower?

Of course, all of this is assuming that the THCA flower you’re buying is fresh, rather than already close to expiring.  So, how can you know that you are buying fresh flower?  That’s easier when you’re buying in person, since you can look at the flower and make sure it still has a pungent aroma and feels fresh rather than dried out.  But you can generally find higher-quality flower online, which rules out that option.

Instead, just go with a reputable company like Bloomz that has a strong following of customers.  Online stores that are popular and have a good reputation throughout the industry are going to have a fast product turnover rate, so that flower never sits on the shelves for long.  Besides that, they are less likely to risk their reputation by selling old flower.

How Can I Store My THCA Flower to Make It Last?

Another thing that’s important is storing your THCA flower the right way.  Basically, even if your flower is totally fresh at the time of purchase, if you’re not storing it right, it’s going to go bad quickly, and lose its effectiveness.  So, what does proper storage mean when it comes to flower?

  • Keep It in an Airtight Container: Of course, an airtight container will keep the flower fresh, so make a point to store it in a jar or something of that nature – including the package it originally came in.
  • Avoid Light: A dark area is best for your THCA flower, since light causes compounds in hemp to break down quickly.
  • Keep It Away from Heat: Another thing to avoid is heat, which can also cause the rapid deterioration of the compounds in hemp, leaving you with flower that’s basically useless.
  • Keep It Dry (But Not Too Dry): Finally, avoid humidity, which can destabilize those cannabinoids and terpenes, and worse, attract mold to your flower.  Then again, you don’t want an area that’s too dry – like below a heating vent – because that will just make your flower dry out.

The most ideal location for your THCA flower, then, is a dark, dry, and cool (at room temperature) area of your home.  This could be a closet, a cabinet, or a drawer, all of which are absolutely perfect for something like hemp flower buds.  Keep in mind that the same rules apply to pre-rolls and moonrocks as well.

What Can I Do if My THCA Flower Has Dried Out or Gotten Too Moist?

Let’s say your flower isn’t expired, but it did end up either drying out or getting too moist/sticky.  In the event of dry flower, simply place a lettuce leaf in the container alongside the buds.  The moisture of the lettuce will get absorbed by the THCA flower.  If the flower is too moist, a dry paper towel sheet inside the container will absorb the excess moisture.
