THCM vs Delta 3 THC: Which Cannabinoid Works Better?

THCM and delta 3 THC are the two newest hemp derivatives to enter the market, and for the time-being, are relatively hard to find.  That being said, it’s likely that you don’t know very much, if anything, about either of them.  Still, they’re both related to THC, and so you’re probably wondering what they can offer in terms of a high, possible benefits, and more.

There’s very little information out there about either of these cannabinoids, but we’re going to compile all of the data that does exist on them for the time-being, to see how they compare to one another.

Why Choose THCM?

THCM Origin

THCM (11-Nor-Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol-9-Carboxylic Acid {Carboxy-THC}) is a byproduct of cannabis first discovered in 1997.  It hasn’t ever been isolated in the cannabis plant, meaning that technically, there’s no proof that it even exists in raw cannabis.  Rather, it has been identified in cannabis smoke, and is used as a biomarker to confirm that a fetus has been exposed to cannabis during their time in the womb.

THCM’s Psychoactive Properties

As of now, we don’t actually know anything about THCM’s possible psychoactive properties.  Whether or not the cannabinoid can produce intoxicating effects has yet to be determined, but one thing that we do know is that if it is psychoactive, the effects are likely to be extremely mild.  And, without knowing whether or not it’s psychoactive, we don’t know if the potential high would be more euphoric, uplifting, sedating, etc.

Purpose for Taking THCM

THCM is extremely rare on the market right now, and for the time-being, we’ve only seen it in vaping products, in combination with other cannabinoids that do deliver well-known psychoactive effects.  Because of that, it’s safe to say that so far, THCM’s purpose is to potentiate the effects of other cannabinoids, and even enhance the entourage effect.

THCM’s Legality

THCM is, in fact, a legal cannabinoid according to federal law, when it comes from the hemp plant, because of the Farm Bill, which passed in 2018, and legalized any hemp product that contains a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC.  THCM may sound a lot like delta 9 THC in its name, but ultimately, it’s a unique compound.

One thing that you need to know, however, is that 19 states have banned all THC cannabinoids, and THCM would fall into that category.  So, you should assume that THCM is illegal in:

  • Alaska
  • Arizona
  • Arkansas
  • Colorado
  • Delaware
  • Hawaii
  • Idaho
  • Iowa
  • Maryland
  • Mississippi
  • Montana
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Dakota
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Washington

Why Choose Delta 3 THC?

Delta 3 THC Origins

Delta 3, also called delta 6a10A THC, is a semi-synthesized cannabinoid that’s made to mimic a naturally occurring THC byproduct that exists in cannabis.  What makes delta 3 different from most forms of THC is that its psychoactive effects are said to be extremely mild, even more so than delta 8 THC, which is a cannabinoid that’s 30% milder than delta 9.  And, that’s because of its distinctive chemical structure in terms of the arrangement of its atoms, that have components that work as a CB1 antagonist, meaning that the cannabinoid doesn’t attach to cannabinoid receptors in the brain as strongly as other THC isomers.

Delta 3 THC’s Psychoactive Properties

Interestingly, delta 3 THC has been found to only become psychoactive after a threshold dosage of 8 milligrams has been consumed, which means that taking anything below that may not get you high at all.  And, like we said, the high is extremely mild.  It’s described as “sativa-like,” to produce a feeling of euphoria, energy and focus.

Purpose for Taking Delta 3 THC

Delta 3 THC is great for those who want a super easy, mild buzz rather than a full-blown high.  Besides that, its potential anticonvulsant properties mean it may prove to be very useful for those who are prone to seizures.

Delta 3 THC’s Legality

Delta 3 THC is federally legal like THCM, because it complies with 2018 Farm Bill.  But, since it’s another form of THC, it’s banned in the same states as THCM.

Final Decision: Delta 3 THC and THCM – Which Form of THC is Right for You?

Delta 3 THC and THCM are two cannabinoids that we hope to learn a lot more about in the future, as they are more widely explored by researchers.  And, for the time-being, they’re both very hard to find in commercially available hemp products.

But, that is likely to change, because there’s a growing interest in both of these cannabinoids, on their own and in combination with other intoxicating hemp derivatives.  So, keep your eyes peeled if you’re interested in exploring the effects of either, as they’re likely going to be easy to find very soon, especially here at Binoid!
