THCM and HHC-O/HXC-O are two derivatives of the hemp plant that are relatively new to our awareness.  With HHC-O, also known as HXC-O, we know a decent amount about its effects, because of lots of anecdotal data, paired with the fact that it was developed in a lab to deliberately yield specific effects.  With THCM, we know almost nothing, since it’s never undergone any research of any kind.

THCM (11-Nor-Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol-9-Carboxylic Acid {Carboxy-THC}) is a cannabis byproduct first discovered in 1997.  To date, it hasn’t been isolated in the cannabis plant, and because of that, technically, there’s no evidence that it even exists in raw cannabis.  Rather, it has been identified in cannabis smoke, and is used as a biomarker to confirm that a fetus has been exposed to cannabis while in the womb.

THCM’s Psychoactive Properties

As it stands, we don’t know anything about THCM’s psychoactive properties.  Whether or not the cannabinoid is intoxicating has yet to be confirmed, but one thing that we do know is that if it is psychoactive, the effects are likely to be extremely mild.  And, without knowing whether or not it’s psychoactive, we don’t know if the potential high would be more calming, euphoric, energizing, etc.

THCM is, in fact, a legal cannabinoid according to federal law, when it comes from the hemp plant, because of the Farm Bill, which passed in 2018, and legalized any hemp product that contains a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC.  THCM may sound a lot like delta 9 THC in its name, but at the end of the day, it’s a different compound.

HHC-O/HXC-O Origins 

HHC-O/HXC-O is a semi-synthesized form of hexahydrocannabinol (HHC), which has been enhanced with an acetate to alter its molecular structure.  The process makes HHC-O/HXC-O more potent than its original form.  HHC is the hydrogenated form of THC, with its properties almost identical.  Overall, HHC-O/HXC-O binds to cannabinoid receptors more efficiently than HHC/HXC.

HHC-O/HXC-O’s Psychoactive Properties

HHC-O/HXC-O can offer a more potent HHC, by about 1.5 times.  It was created to be that way, after all.  HHC-O/HXC-O is known for its potent feelings of euphoria and its couchlock.  It’s likely that HHC-O/HXC-O is milder than THCM.

THCM and HHC-O/HXC-O are two derivatives of the hemp plant with very little information out there on them.  And, while the former is a natural compound in cannabis smoke (and likely the plant as well), the latter is made in a laboratory, to produce very specific effects to the body and mind.

Given what we’ve learned about THCM’s possible potentiating qualities, don’t be surprised to see products that combine these two cannabinoids together.  And, keep your eyes out in general for THCM, as it’s likely going to be more and more widely available in the near future.
