THCM Origin

THCM (11-Nor-Delta-9-Tetrahydrocannabinol-9-Carboxylic Acid {Carboxy-THC}) is a cannabis byproduct first discovered in 1997.  It hasn’t ever been isolated in the cannabis plant, meaning that technically, there’s no proof that it even exists in raw cannabis.  Rather, it has been identified in cannabis smoke, and is used as a biomarker to confirm that a fetus has been exposed to cannabis while in the womb.

THCM’s Psychoactive Properties

As of now, we don’t know about THCM’s psychoactive effects.  Whether or not the cannabinoid is intoxicating has yet to be confirmed, but one thing that we do know is that if it is psychoactive, the effects are likely to be very mild.  And of course, without knowing whether or not it’s intoxicating, we don’t know if the potential high would be more euphoric, uplifting, sedating, etc.

THCM is, in fact, a legal cannabinoid according to federal law, when it comes from the hemp plant, because of the Farm Bill, which passed in 2018, and legalized all hemp products that contain a maximum of 0.3% delta 9 THC.  THCM may sound a lot like delta 9 THC in its name, but ultimately, it’s a different compound.

THC-B Origins 

THC-B, or tetrahydrocannabutol, was discovered only in the last couple of years, and so there’s really no in-depth information that we have about it.  In terms of its chemical structure, we do know that it has a butol side chain (hence the name) rather than the pentyl side chain that is the chemical structure of delta 9 THC.  We also know it’s one of the most trace cannabinoids in hemp.

THC-B’s Psychoactive Properties

THC-B ’s unique high is surprisingly a subject of debate, since it’s so new that few people have even experienced it, and research on it just doesn’t exist.  We do know that it’s intoxicating because it attaches to CB1 receptors that create a high, and while some say that the high feels just like delta 9’s, others say that it’s more potently psychoactive, although we do know that it’s not the most intoxicating cannabinoid in hemp.

THC-B is considered a recreational cannabinoid for now, since most people who are buying it are doing so because they want to see what the high feels like.

THC-B’s Legality 

THC-B is a federally legal cannabinoid protected under the 2018 Farm Bill, just like THCM.  But, again, THC-B is banned in the 19 states above, as it is a THC cannabinoid.

Final Decision: THCM and THC-B – Two Fascinating Forms of THC  

At the end of the day, there are a lot of THC cannabinoids popping up on the hemp market, and as you can see, it’s a mistake to think that they’re all alike.  With THCM, we know basically nothing about what it can do for us, but that will change soon, as more research goes into understanding it.  And, with THC-B, we don’t have the clearest picture of its effects, either.
