With an influx of more THCA products are hitting the market, we’re starting to see a widening gap when it comes to the quality of the formulas hitting the shelves. When it comes to THCA dabs, vapes, flower, and the like, two things that customers are particularly concerned about are purity and potency. Obviously, nobody wants a product filled with impurities, interfering with both effectiveness and flavor. And, nobody wants a THCA-based product that doesn’t contain a potent enough amount of this cannabinoid that the results end up being lackluster.
Both purity and potency are pretty easy to identify, however, when you’re shopping around for your favorite THCA formula types. It all comes down to the percent of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, and by knowing what’s considered standard percentage-wise, you will be able to make more informed choices when purchasing THCA.

What Does THCA Percent Mean?
The percent of THCA can refer to two things: one is the percent of a THCA distillate, or the percent of THCA in a formulated product. THCA distillate is a pure extraction of tetrahydrocannabinolic acid, which can be sold as is, but is more commonly added to a product, whether it be a vape oil, a concentrate, hemp flower, gummies, tinctures, etc. In this case, the percentage tells you the purity of the distillate, with a higher purity level naturally being better.
But, there’s another percentage you may come across when looking at lab reports, which is the amount of THCA in the product formula. This reflects how much THCA distillate was added to a product, which again could be anything from vapes to gummies. In this case, it’s not the purity of the distillate that you’re learning about, but the potency of THCA distillate in the overall formula.
THCA Distillate and Purity: Why the Percent Matters
Let’s focus on the percentage as it applies to THCA distillate, first. To understand what the percent represents, we need to talk about how distillate is created.
THCA distillate is an extract made typically through a CO2 extraction, followed by a steam distillation process. First, the hemp plant is run through a 3-part chamber system, which pushes CO2 through the plant material, with one chamber collecting the resulting extract. The result is a full spectrum hemp extract – in other words, an extract of the hemp plant that retains the complete chemical composition of cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids, nutrients, and other naturally occurring compounds.
To create a THCA distillate, steam distillation is applied to the full spectrum hemp extract, with varying levels of temperature and pressure. The goal is to discard all of the unwanted compounds to leave behind only pure THCA. What gets discarded is every other cannabinoid, as well as terpenes, flavonoids, nutrients, lipids, chlorophyll, and any other compounds that aren’t THCA.
The percentage of the distillate therefore tells you how successfully all other compounds were removed. A 100% pure distillate is not physically possible, but a 99% THCA distillate is achievable, but only if the manufacturer is using the most advanced and thorough distillation methods possible. Most distillates on the market fall more into the 90-95% purity range.

The THCA Percent in a Formulated Product
Distillate is most frequently added to other ingredients to formulate a product. In a vape oil, that distillate is combined with terpene extracts. In a concentrate, the distillate made by added to live resin. In flower, the distillate is infused into raw hemp flower buds, which are naturally full spectrum.
In this case, the percentage you see in a lab report tells you how much THCA is in the product compared to the rest of the chemical compounds that are associated with hemp. Take THCA flower, for instance. You’ll likely see somewhere between 15-30% THCA depending on the strain, which tells you how potent the product is, and can be compared to the amount of THC found in cannabis flower.
