Live Badder vs Live Sugar: What’s The Difference? Which Is Better?

Contender #1: Live Badder

Live badder is sort of a spinoff on the more traditional badder that has been around for well over a decade on the dabbing market.  Badder gets its name from its physical similarities to cake batter, as it’s a smooth, creamy, and whipped type of concentrate with an appropriately pale yellow hue.

Badder is loved for its exceptional flavor, because it undergoes less processing than other types of concentrates (wax, shatter, etc.), and less processing means better-preserved terpenes.  

Now, live badder is simply badder derived from fresh, flash-frozen cannabis flower, rather than dry-cured flower – just like the difference between live resin and “standard” extract.  Working with fresh flower means that you end up with a higher trichome count at the start, which results in a far higher potency, as dry-curing ends up degrading some of these compound-rich trichomes for the sake of flower bud preservation. 

Live Badder Creation Process:

To make live badder, a solvent is applied to fresh, flash-frozen flower buds (usually butane) to separate the cannabinoids and terpenes from the raw plant material.  This produces a liquid, oil-soluble extract that gets cooked to concentrate these compounds, and what makes badder distinctive from other concentrates is that you whip it while it cools, or else it would turn into wax.  Some manufacturers will actually apply a cooling method to the concentrate to get an even fluffier, creamier texture, as this ensures that the consistency never becomes too wax-like.

Live Badder Pros & Cons:

Pros:

• Live badder offers outstanding flavor, although it probably can’t compete with live sugar, which we’ll be getting into next.  Still, it’s more flavorful than most extracts and concentrates out there.

• Liquid badder has an aesthetically pleasing batter-like consistency, as it’s whipped.
• Liquid badder vaporizes well because it’s not too thick, and it’s unlikely to clog a device.  That’s why you’ll find it in some vape cartridges and disposable vape pens.
• Liquid badder is more potent than “regular” extracts, as well as standard live resin.

Cons:

• Live badder involves the use of a solvent, while live sugar does not.  While the solvent is removed from the final product via a vacuum, there are a number of “purists” out there who believe that solventless concentrates are cleaner, purer, and more structurally sound, chemically speaking.
• Many believe that live sugar is a tastier concentrate.

Contender #2: Live Sugar

Next up is live sugar, which’s less known, despite being around for a long time.  Live sugar is a solventless concentrate made specifically from the trichomes of the flower buds, where the oil is collected and concentrated to create a sugar-like consistency that has an out-of-this-world flavor.  People often remark on how blown away they are by the taste of live sugar compared to other cannabis extracts and concentrates.  Like live badder, live sugar is made from fresh, flash-frozen flower, as opposed to dry-cured flower.

Live Sugar Creation Process

There are actually a few methods to making live sugar, but the most standard practice involves placing the fresh, flash-frozen flower into cold water, to help separate those trichomes from the plant material.  Then, the trichomes are harvested from the buds, and pressed until their oils are extracted.  The oil is then placed into a vacuum chamber, which sucks out the water and leaves behind a concentrated sugar-like texture that is very potent.  Low temperatures are applied to gently concentrate the product further, boosting the potency while perfectly retaining the original flavor of each terpene.

Live Sugar Pros & Cons:

Pros:

• Connoisseurs will tell you that live sugar gives you the best flavor out of any cannabis extract, period.
• Live sugar is solventless, while live badder is not.
• Live sugar is easy to mix into flower due to its thin, watery, and sugary consistency.

Cons:

• You’re less likely to find live sugar on the market, as it’s not super popular just yet.  Also, it may not be available in other types of cannabis products, like vapes, gummies, etc. compared to live badder.’

• Live sugar likely has a lower cannabinoid concentration than live badder.

Sugar or Badder: Which Live Concentrate is the “Sweetest” Option?
